Renowned actor Amitabh Bachchan recently shared a video “A marvel”of himself traversing through the newly inaugurated Coastal Road tunnel in Mumbai, which connects Marine Drive and the Bandra-Worli Sea Link. Amitabh Bachchan lauded the tunnel as “a marvel” for significantly reducing travel time between the two points. The 10.8-kilometer-long Coastal Road includes a two-kilometer tunnel between Priyadarshini Park and Marine Drive. Its first phase was inaugurated on March 11 by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, alongside Deputy Chief Ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar. The project, commenced on October 13, 2018, is estimated to cost ₹12,721 crore.
In his post marked as T 4968, Amitabh Bachchan expressed his awe, saying, “Went first time in the TUNNEL – Enter before Haji Ali and out Half way to Marine Drive… a Marvel.”
Reactions poured in, with one user praising Mumbai’s modern roadways and thanking Amitabh Bachchan for sharing the experience. Another credited the Maharashtra Government and Nitin Gadkari for the achievement. A third suggested Amitabh Bachchan try the Atal Tunnel.
The Coastal Road significantly reduces travel time from Worli to Marine Drive, cutting it down to less than 10 minutes for the nearly 10-kilometer stretch, compared to the previous 40-50 minutes during peak hours. Speed limits have been implemented, with a maximum of 80 kilometers per hour on straight roads, reduced to 60 kmph inside the tunnel and at turning points and entry/exit points set at 40 kmph.
Additionally, a world-class Central Park, spanning 320 acres, named ‘Dharmaveer Sambhaji Maharaj Coastal Road‘, is set to be established along the road, as per Mr. Shinde’s announcement earlier this month.
